The race winning March 09R is now a “ready to race” customer race car perfect for track days and for school car use.
Only 5 March 75S cars were made for the European 2 Litre sports championship. The cars aerodynamics were aggressive with a sharp lower nose similar to contemporary F1 cars of the time, a large air box and full width strut mounted wing.
KWM reverse engineered the 09R from the bodywork of the 75S (chassis 001) using their extensive knowledge of endurance race cars and experience designing for LMP1 and LMP2.
CAD data was transferred into CFD software and developed into a more suitable aerodynamic shape. The most critical areas that were identified for development were the front splitter, rear wing, long rear tail and the cockpit area. Work done on these areas improved the down force to drag ratio from the 75S’s unimpressive 1 to very respectable 4.5 for the March (Sports) 09R
The March 09R’s monocoque is constructed in aerospace aluminium incorporating a safety cell, front impact hose box and roll over structure made from high grade carbon steel designed using computer simulation and finite element analysis.
In 2010 the March 09R proved its worth on the track, with numerous podium finishes. Following customer and engineer feedback KWM re-engineered the monocoque to improve the cockpit ergonomics, and developed the steering geometry to reduce the steering effort.
In August 2013 in the Brands Hatch GP Enduro the car started the race from the front row of the grid on a very wet track and took the lead winning the event by nearly a lap - leading virtually every lap.
